Why do product images help increase engagement?

We’re all familiar with the old saying “an image is worth a thousand words”. Today, in the middle of all of the textual information we receive (e-mails, text messages, DMs, etc.), that saying rings a lot truer than ever before.

A high-quality image (just like a high-quality marketing video) speaks for itself, and most of the time, we tend to relate our past experiences with images. This phenomenon is known as the Picture Superiority Effect and it explains why pictures and images are more likely to be remembered than words.

According to the theory, it is easier to remember information learned through images than to remember information learned through just reading texts.

Our brain processes visual information 60,000 times faster than textual information. Furthermore, 80% of the information we retain is visual (images and videos) compared to only 20% through reading.

We grow up recognizing images

Actually, we were born to recognize images. Reading and writing come later as we get a little bit older. That’s why our eyes are so easily attracted to images.

In a quick glance, our brain can make various interpretations. And that’s the main reason why it’s so important for us to include product images and marketing videos in our marketing strategy.

Product images are the “face of your brand”

Look at your product images as if they were the brand ambassadors of your websites and all of your online and offline marketing channels (especially your product catalogs).

They’re easy to remember

Its easier to obtain information from an image than from reading a text block, that’s because the brain memorizes images much easier than text. Product images can create an impact and “stick” to your customer’s head, meaning they will be a major contributor to increase brand awareness, attract and retain customers.

To sum up

Product images not only capture your target market’s attention, but they also create a much bigger impact than text alone. Hence the reason why high-quality images must be a part of your marketing strategy in order to improve your customer’s purchase journey, increase engagement and instigate a purchase.
